The dyes are non-toxic, non-hazardous, environmentally-friendly and do not contain any heavy metals.
Sarah's Silks offers quality silk and cotton playcloths in radiant colors that inspire open-ended play encouraging children to express themselves and the wonders of their imaginations.
The silk used for Sarah's Silks is Habotai, also known as Mulberry Silk. It is considered the highest quality silk you can find. 100% pure Habotai silk is fine, light and airy. Natural imperfections in the weave, help prove the silks authenticity.
Sarah's Silk Play Silks have a weight of 5 momme, which lets them flow and produces a light airy movement when used in play.
The illustrated playsilks, dressups and toys use a heavier weight silk - 8 mommes, for extra durability.
Did you know? Mulberry silk contains Sericin and Fibroin - natural proteins produced by the silk worm. These proteins are what makes silk hypo-allergenic, resistance to dust mites, anti-inflammatory, non-irritating and anti-bacterial.
Silk is a natural and delicate fabric. It is naturally resistant to dirt and odours, and it's natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties mean it doe not need to be washed too regularly.
If you do need to wash your Sarah's Silk, we recommend handwashing with a mild detergent designed for silk - or just use cool water.
Drip dry and be aware that silk looses strength when wet, so dry carefully and do not wring, spin, or agitate.
True Fact: Wet silk is only 80% as strong as dry silk!
These versatile toys are perfect for various types of play, seamlessly fitting into Waldorf pedagogy, which emphasises imaginative exploration and hands-on learning. By encouraging self-expression and storytelling, Sarah's Silks toys help children develop critical thinking and social skills while nurturing their imaginations. The open-ended nature of these playcloths allows for endless possibilities, whether they are creating a magical fortress, a vibrant costume, or a whimsical landscape.
Children who develop inner creativity at an early age grow up to become inventive, resourceful adults with a greater depth of creative thinking. This collection not only sparks joy and creativity but also supports holistic development in a fun and engaging way.
Sarah Lee, creator of Sarah's Silks, smiles while reflecting on her oldest son's early childhood days. "Mom, I am a turtle today. I need some green to wear." "I need some wings to fly today - blue ones!" Or, "She is the princess and I am the knight. We need some pink, purple and red colors." First Sarah reached for an old silk scarf. Her son loved the smooth, silky feel. Finally something he didn't declare itchy! Soon she found herself dying squares of silks to support his play.
Sarah's Silks is based in California, US. As a family-owned company Sarah's Silks has been importing sustainably-produced, hand-woven silks from China for many years. Sarah sources her materials from a village near Suzhou. The workers - mostly women - generally work from home, weaving, dyeing, sewing, ironing the silk products. Sarah's Silks pays their workers an above-average minimum wage, and also provides incentives such as access to supplemental health insurance for them and their families.
The silk and play silks in the Sarah's Silk range are produced on family farms where silk worms are hand fed pesticide free mulberry leaves.
The factories that make the silk in the range are long-time partners, valuing the environment and their employees. They pay fair wages and provide quality working conditions.
Sarah's Silks are woven, dyed and sewn in Suzhou, a beautiful city, long renowned for its silk culture.
By working with family farms and factories, Sarah's Silks helps support communities and keeps the ancient traditions of silk making alive.
