Simple Handmade Crafts for Children: Air Dried Clay Hanging Decorations

As holidays, school breaks, and special occasions roll around, it’s easy for children—and adults—to get swept up in excitement, plans, and “must-do” lists. Yet these moments hold so much more than busyness. They offer a chance to slow down, connect, and enjoy simple, meaningful experiences together. Waldorf-inspired crafting is a gentle way to guide children back to this calmer rhythm, inviting them to create with their hands, express themselves, and discover the quiet joy of making.

In this blog, Erica Russell—former teacher, homeschooling mum, and lifelong Steiner enthusiast—shares one of her family’s favourite activities: making air-dried clay decorations. Simple, calming, and suitable for even the youngest makers, this craft adds creativity and connection to holidays, school breaks, or quiet afternoons at home. Whether your child is pressing patterns into soft clay or displaying their finished piece, these handmade treasures offer a pause in the rush and a chance to start traditions your family can enjoy year after year.

A Quiet Afternoon of Clay Crafting

Last year, a quiet afternoon of clay decorating quickly became one of my son’s favourite creative moments. This gentle, year-round activity lets children explore shapes and textures at their own pace, while creating handmade decorations that make thoughtful gifts or simple playgroup activities. Here’s everything you’ll need to try this open-ended craft at home.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Roll out the clay on a flat surface (you might want to put down a protective board or newspaper) until it’s about half a centimetre thick.
  2. Let your child choose their cookie cutter and press it into the clay.
  3. Once you have your shape, use a stick to create patterns on the ornament, and add crystals or flowers if desired.
  4. Use the stick to make a small hole near the top for threading.
  5. Leave to dry for 24-48 hours, then thread ribbon or string through the hole and hang on your tree.
  6. Alternatively, you can leave the decorations to dry and paint with watercolours before hanging them on the tree.

Creating Cherished Clay Decorations

As the clay dries and each piece takes its final form, there’s a quiet sense of satisfaction in seeing something made slowly, with care and intention. These small moments of making often become the ones children remember most—simple, calm and filled with presence.

Whether hung around the home, gifted to someone special or brought out again next season, these handmade decorations carry the warmth of shared time. They serve as gentle reminders that creativity, connection and unhurried moments are at the heart of meaningful family traditions.
