Reflections from Noosa: Mercurius Australia at the 2025 SEA National Teachers' Conference

Earlier this month, Mercurius Australia had the pleasure of joining the 2025 SEA National Teachers' Conference, hosted at the beautiful Noosa Pengari Steiner School in Queensland. Set against the warmth of the mid-winter sun and the backdrop of rainforest and sea, the conference brought together teachers and school leaders from across the country to explore the theme "I and Us: finding our purpose as individuals and communities".

As the main sponsor of the event, Mercurius Australia was invited to share a few words - and what a joy it was to stand among so many familiar and new faces who care deeply about the same things we do: quality education, meaningful materials, and the shared work of building a healthy future for our children.

One of the moments that stayed with us most came during Bernd Ruf's keynote on Emergency Pedagogy. His insights into how rhythm, artistic activity, and sensory experiences support children in processing trauma served as a powerful reminder of the deeper role materials can play in education. When we hand a child a block crayon, a piece of beeswax, or guide them through their first recorder lesson - we're offering more than a product. In the right hands and the right context, these materials become tools for healing, connection, and growth.

Over the past year Mercurius has made it a priority to connect closely with schools, teachers, and administrators — to hear what's working well and where we can improve. That feedback has guided a number of changes, from improved stock availability and reduced backorders to the development of new lesson books and a more flexible online ordering system tailored to the unique needs of each school.

Throughout the week, our stand and toy corner became a vibrant meeting point — a place to play, chat, reconnect, and exchange ideas. Teachers shared stories of classroom transformations, children's breakthrough moments with particular materials, and the small daily miracles that happen when quality meets creativity. It was heartening to hear how our materials are being woven into the fabric of learning across classrooms, and to receive direct feedback that continues to shape what we do.

We also spoke about our upcoming Back-to-School season and the special offerings we've prepared to support schools during this critical time of year. There's something magical about fresh beginnings, and we want to ensure every classroom has access to the materials that spark wonder and learning.

Supporting Your Back-to-School Journey

This year, we're excited to offer some exceptional Back-to-School specials that we know will make a real difference in your classrooms:

Mercurius Lesson Books - Our thoughtfully designed lesson books come in carefully considered sizes that support each stage of development, from Large books that give younger children the freedom of space for pictorial learning, to Medium books with special proportions that help develop harmony and balanced thinking, through to A4 books for critical thinking in high school. Each size serves the child's developmental needs, moving beyond mere convenience to support natural learning rhythms.

Golden Fleece Australian Eco Wool - Sourced from Merino Border Leicester sheep and processed through an ethical journey, the colours have been carefully blended to perfectly match the Goethean colour wheel. 'Living' colours that resonate with the developing soul of the child while remaining free from polymer coatings for a truly natural experience.

New Greenfield ECO Pens - Made exclusively for Mercurius with all plastic components crafted entirely from 100% recycled materials, these ergonomically designed pens feature soft, non-slip finger depressions that support comfortable tripod grip. The remarkable versatility of interchangeable nibs means one pen body accommodates calligraphy, fountain, and rollerball nibs, while the component-based system allows you to replace specific parts rather than disposing of entire pens.

Recorders - Heavily Subsidised - Our selection includes beautifully crafted wooden recorders from trusted brands including Choroi and Moeck, thoughtfully selected for their tonal warmth, durability, and artistic beauty. From pentatonic recorders perfect for early childhood's free-playing to diatonic models recommended for older children, every child can access the profound gift of music-making during our special Back-to-School pricing period.

LYRA Favourites - The beloved LYRA range continues to be a cornerstone of artistic expression in Waldorf classrooms. From their renowned coloured pencils to specialty art materials, these time-tested favourites will be available at special Back-to-School pricing.

These offerings reflect our understanding that the beginning of the school year is both an investment and a commitment - in our children, in our teachers, and in the transformative power of quality materials.

Looking Forward with Purpose

Annette took a moment to speak about something close to our hearts: product innovation and sustainability. Whether it's rethinking packaging to reduce plastic, exploring more earth-conscious materials, or partnering with likeminded suppliers who share our values, we're constantly asking how we can do better - not just in what we offer, but in how we work. From recycled ECO pens to carefully sourced beeswax and the enduring quality of STOCKMAR crayons, our goal is to provide materials that support the child's development and honour the earth they will inherit.

The conversations we had in Noosa reminded us why we do this work. Behind every order, every carefully selected product, and every innovation lies a simple truth: we're all part of something larger than ourselves. Whether you're a teacher guiding young minds, a parent supporting learning at home, or a supplier committed to quality, we're united in our dedication to nurturing human potential.

We are deeply grateful to be part of this vibrant community. To everyone who stopped by for a conversation, shared their classroom stories, tested out new materials, or simply played with a block crayon or modelling wax, or tested out our new Stapelstein Dynamic Seating range — thank you. Your passion and dedication inspire us daily. It's a privilege to support your work, and we look forward to walking this path together in the year ahead.

The seeds planted in Noosa will continue to grow in classrooms across Australia, and we couldn't be more grateful to be part of that ongoing story of learning, growth, and connection.
