Healthy Development is built on Healthy Senses

An environment rich in sensory experiences is extremely important for healthy development in children. Sensing ourselves is the basis of our self-awareness, of self-consciousness and from here, consciousness of our surroundings and the other. This begins with the development of healthy physical senses - touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight. These physical senses in turn lay the strong foundation and scaffolding to develop the more refined subtle senses - the senses that allow us to sense into our surrounding space, sense into truth and sense into the other.

Through the sense of touch we make contact with the external world and learn more about our boundaries.

Through the sense of smell, the sense of taste and the sense of sight, quality and matter are revealed to us. By using these senses, we differentiate between a good and bad smell, sweet and sour tastes, colours, meanings of colours, etc. In this way we learn to differentiate and form opinions. We develop taste and a feeling for good and evil.

The sense of warmth enables us to penetrate through what is at the surface and to perceive something about an objects (or our own) inner condition.

The sense of hearing, the sense of speech, the thought sense and the sense of self help to give us information about our own self in relation to our surroundings and other people.

The healthy development and refinement of all our senses is what makes us social and responsible human beings.

Using Art to Experience and Stimulate our Senses

Stockmar paints, crayons and modelling materials are deliberately designed to appeal to the childs senses. In our technological world, virtual reality often replaces genuine experience. Stockmar products are aimed at providing genuine artistic experience which develop and enhance the senses.

Basic experiences like feeling, grasping and shaping act on the childs brain and have a positive effect on the sensory motor development. In todays world such a stimulus is more important than ever before. Only when children are able to register the effect of the external world on their senses can they take their stand in the world with confidence. There is a circular movement from experience of self to experience of the wider environment.

In order for the senses to be holistically addressed and stimulated, the materials need to be of a quality that is not just measurable, but is also subjectively perceptible from an experiential, feeling level. The packaging, colour, scent, shape, properties, ease of handling and artistic possibilities all contribute to a total aesthetic and sense-imbued experience.

Stockmar Products and the Developing Senses

The core and mission of what underpins Stockmar's product development is the unfolding sensory development of the child as understood by Rudolf Steiner.

Today, more than ever, this is of the upmost importance, as much of our modern lifestyle overloads certain aspects of primary sense development and limits the experience of other more subtle senses which are becoming increasingly important and necessary to be able to stand strong and with heart in the modern world.

When you choose Stockmar Products, you are guaranteed a quality product that looks at many aspects beyond our standard quality measurements. Stockmar balances the environmental, social and ethical impacts of the raw ingredients and methods of production with the pedagogical and developmental considerations of the child. The healthy development of the child, especially in regards to sensory development is at all times held to be of the utmost importance.
